Historical Timeline
Jefferson County established by the Florida Territorial Legislature, named after President Thomas Jefferson.
Monticello incorporated as the county seat, named after Jefferson's Virginia estate.
Florida becomes the 27th state. Jefferson County is one of the most prosperous plantation counties in the territory.
Civil War era. Jefferson County provides troops and supplies to the Confederacy. The Battle of Natural Bridge (nearby) helps defend Tallahassee.
Agriculture transitions from cotton and tobacco to watermelons, cattle, and timber. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad connects Monticello.
