About Jefferson

Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park

Home to Florida's tallest prehistoric ceremonial mound, a 46-foot structure built over 1,000 years ago by the Lake Jackson culture.

Florida's Tallest Prehistoric Mound

Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park protects one of the most significant archaeological sites in the southeastern United States. The centerpiece is a massive 46-foot ceremonial mound built between 1100 and 1500 AD by the Lake Jackson culture, a Mississippian-era society.

The mound is the tallest prehistoric structure in Florida and one of the largest in the southeastern United States. The site also contains several smaller mounds and a large village area. The park offers hiking trails through pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks, with interpretive exhibits explaining the archaeological significance.
