About Jefferson
Wacissa River & Springs
A pristine spring-fed river offering kayaking, swimming, fishing, and wildlife viewing in the heart of Jefferson County.
A Spring-Fed Paradise
The Wacissa River is one of Florida's most beautiful and least-crowded spring-fed waterways. Originating from a cluster of more than a dozen springs in southern Jefferson County, the river flows approximately 14 miles south to join the Aucilla River before reaching the Gulf of Mexico.
The headsprings area, accessible from the Wacissa Springs public boat ramp, provides crystal-clear water ideal for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. The river is home to an abundance of wildlife including manatees, alligators, otters, osprey, bald eagles, and numerous fish species.
Unlike many Florida spring runs that have become crowded, the Wacissa retains a wild, unspoiled character. The surrounding forests and wetlands are largely undeveloped, creating a wilderness experience within easy reach of Tallahassee.
